My First Cinemagraph

I’ve stumbled upon a number of these in the past and always wondered how they were pulled off. Did some Googling about and found some mobile apps that will allow you to easily create them. The mobile app variety limits you a bit, and the high quality apps cost a fair amount of money. So off to Photoshop and Premiere I went.

First I pushed the video into slow motion in Premiere. Shot it at 60fps, 1/125. After exporting the clip and getting what I hoped was a similar opening and closing frame (not close enough as it turns out) I brought it into Photoshop. This video is very helpful on what to do exactly in PS. Basically adjustment layers and Photoshop’s fairly recent video editing capabilities make this possible. Pretty rad. Export as gif (I used the settings of perceptual, noise and 256 colors but then changed the width to 600px) and walla:

Christen-Cinemagraph-(600px-wide)

Ever try one of these? Holler if you have and/or have any tips to optimize things a bit better.
